Foundation:

Founded on 13th October 2008 Samruk-Kazyna, (the Sovereign Welfare Fund of the Government of Kazakhstan), has the intent to improve and protect the welfare of the people of Kazakhstan and to support the modernisation of the national economy.

Today, Samruk-Kazyna  plays  a  special  role  in  the  development  and diversification  of  the  country’s economy, serving as a driver through effective management of our investment portfolio, increasing the profitability of portfolio companies and supporting sustainable development.

Key Role:

In  2018,  the  Fund defined  new development  horizons, and will gradually  commence  international  investments  and  increase  its presence  in  foreign  markets. Samruk-Kazyna is now focusing  its  efforts  on  creating  a  diversified  high-yield  portfolio  of investments and assets both in Kazakhstan and abroad, so  protecting prosperity for future generations. In order to carry out investments abroad, the Fund intends to establish partnerships with leading sovereign funds and investment companies. The London office is playing a key role in this.

The economic diversification, digital and technological modernisation, achievement of high standards of corporate governance, transfer of assets to a competitive environment and improvement of approaches to investment activities will become a framework for further development of the Fund.

Assets:

The assets managed by Samruk-Kazyna presently exceed 67 billion US dollars, covering the main sectors of the economy of Kazakhstan – oil and gas, transport and logistics, communications, energy, and petrochemical sectors. Our principal companies include:

  1. KazMunayGas – national oil & gas company that produces 27% of total oil and condensate in Kazakhstan;

  2. Kazakhstan Temir Zholy –  the sole owner & operator of railway infrastructure in Kazakhstan;

  3. KazAtomProm – leading uranium producer, with a global market share of more than 20%;

  4. Air Astana – Kazakhstan’s flagship airline, a Joint Venture between the Kazakhstan and UK-based BAE Systems;

  5. Samruk-Energy – largest energy generating company, producing 30% of electrical energy in Kazakhstan;

  6. KEGOC – the sole electricity distributor in Kazakhstan, responsible for overall management and operation of the country’s energy system;

  7. Kazakhtelecom – leading telecommunication operator, with dominant market share of 35%;

  8. Kazpost – national logistics company with postal, financial, brokerage, agency and electronic services and the largest branch network in Kazakhstan;

  9. Tau-Ken Samruk –mining company which extracts and produces gold, copper, zinc, lead, iron ore, chromium and tin;

  10. United Chemical Company – chemical company aimed at production of high-end, export oriented & innovative products;

  11. Samruk-Kazyna Invest – investment company, which deals with direct financing of investment projects directed at creating competitive goods and services with the purpose of qualitative increase of local content;

  12. Samruk-Kazyna Real Estate Fund – company aimed at creating relevant infrastructure and real estate facilities with the use of modern technologies and partners attraction.

Representative office in London:

The representative office of Samruk-Kazyna in London is today actively engaged in cooperation with international investors from Europe and America in order to:  

  1. Attract strategic investors into portfolio companies inside the Fund;

  2. Achieve maximum benefit for Kazakhstan from the present privatisation program;

  3. Cooperate with London Stock Exchange – with IPO’s of the main portfolio companies of the Fund.

Opportunities exist to work with us in London to place investments into our companies and to spread our own portfolio of investments.
