About the event

Kazakhstan’s glaciers are melting. They are a critical source of water for agriculture, industry and in particular for Almaty, drinking water.

The international team of panellists will present the current position on the Tien Shan glaciers, how they have retreated, and what the future might hold.

They will also introduce a BKS initiative starting in July 2026 of expeditions for young Kazakh citizens. The first expedition will bring university students onto the glaciers to help the scientists who are working there, and in so doing help raise public awareness of the challenges.

This high-level discussion will highlight the preparations for the expedition and shed more detail on its goals and also discuss participation in the 2026 Astana Ecological Summit.

The session will be moderated and structured to encourage concise interventions followed by an interactive Q&A.
